Gorgeous Agbani Darego can now be seen alongside A-listers such as Natalie Imbruglia, Laetitia Casta and Beyonce Knowles as a L'Oreal spokesperson, but she got her big break – and made global history – as the first black Miss World from Africa.

The 18-year-old computer science undergraduate shot to stardom when she took the Miss World crown in 2001. "I have made history… black is beautiful," she exclaimed after winning the title.

It wasn't long before Donald Trump had invited her to the Big Apple to sign a modelling deal with his agency, and Naomi Campbell took her under her wing, giving the rising star a spot in her Barcelona charity fashion show.
