Chelsea still targeting Wayne Rooney despite offering Samuel Eto'o deal27 août 2013
Cameroon striker offered one-year deal at Stamford Bridge while Blues plot new £40million Rooney bid following Old Trafford clash.
Chelsea still wants to sign Wayne Rooney despite their interest in Samuel Eto’o.
A new bid for Rooney around the £40million mark is expected to be lodged after Manchester United and Chelsea clash at Old Trafford tonight.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho refuses to accept United’s insistence that the England striker is not for sale and said: “Now we are quiet, we have no contact. Nothing, nothing at all. Tuesday, we will have another feeling.
“The transfer window closes in one week or 10 days, or whatever.
“After 10 days, everything is over and, for five months, nobody speaks again about transfers.
“So I think if, in this moment, we want to upset them as some people were saying, now we’d be making a bid for the player every day - before the match.”
If Chelsea fail to sign Rooney this summer, they will return for him in January, and then again next summer if necessary.
Although the Special One is keen to work with 32-year-old Eto’o again - the Cameroon legend was in the Inter team that stormed to the Treble three years ago - it is understood that it would not be at the expense of losing Rooney.
Chelsea yesterday confirmed £32 million Brazilian Willian has agreed to join the club, subject to receiving a work permit, while Eto’o has been offered a one-year deal at Stamford Bridge but is also talking to Inter who have put a two-year offer on the table.
The club’s owner Massimo Moratti said last night: “Let’s see what happens in the next few days.”
